Things to Do in The Rocks: Sydney's Oldest and Most Atmospheric Neighbourhood

Sydney Fixed Fare Taxi · 11 June 2026

Tucked beneath the Harbour Bridge on the western edge of Circular Quay, The Rocks is where Sydney began. Cobblestone laneways, sandstone warehouses, and some of the oldest pubs in the country sit a few minutes' walk from the Opera House. It's compact, walkable, and packed with character — perfect for a half-day on foot.

1. Wander the historic laneways

Start with the free self-guided heritage walk. Narrow lanes like Suez Canal and Nurses Walk date back to the colony's earliest years, and plaques along the way tell the stories. The Rocks Discovery Museum (free entry) is a quick, well-done introduction to the area's history.

2. The Rocks Markets

On weekends, George Street and Playfair Street fill with stalls — handmade homewares, art, jewellery, and street food. The Friday Foodie Market is the spot for lunch, while the weekend markets lean toward crafts and gifts. It's one of the better market experiences in the city centre.

3. Drink in a piece of history

The Rocks lays claim to several of Sydney's oldest pubs. The Lord Nelson and the Fortune of War both trade on long histories and pour proper pints. Even if you're not drinking, the interiors are worth a look.

4. The Museum of Contemporary Art

The MCA sits right on Circular Quay with free general admission and a rooftop café that looks straight across to the Opera House. It's a reliable rainy-day option and the view from the terrace is one of the best free vantage points in the city.

5. Visit during Vivid Sydney (seasonal)

If you're reading this in late May or early June, The Rocks is a key precinct of Vivid Sydney, with light installations threading through the laneways and projections on the heritage facades. It's a completely different experience after dark. See our what's on in Sydney this week guide for current dates and the best viewing spots.
